I was sad to hear that the Hollywood Theater that was near where I live had closed down at the start of the year. True, I hadn’t been there in years and a few of the people that had been in the last couple of years said it had really declined. I’m not too surprised, I remember when it was build and it must have been around 30 years old. Still when it was new it was a wonderful place to go see a movie and one of the things I loved the most about it was the concession stand. It had a long counter of registers and candy cases, soda fountains, nachos, hot dogs, and most of all the popcorn poppers going on the back wall.

Go there any Friday night or Saturday and chances are all three huge poppers were running nonstop. The smell was incredible. I’d go up and order my large drink and large popcorn (even if I was by myself) and counter person would go to the nearest popper, dump out the current batch and start a new one. She would then take a scoop and throw the popcorn in the air to land in the bucket two or three times until it was full. This was more than just a show, by tossing the popcorn in the air it “filled” the buck with less popcorn than simply scooping it out. Still it didn’t matter because the smell, the activity, the crowds, and the excitement were often better than the movies I saw (unless it was Batman or Star Wars).

A few years ago there was a new theater built in town. It has all the new bells and whistles for the movies.
